In 2020, aerospace entrepreneur Robert T. Bigelow founded the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS). BICS’s mission includes “to communicate, facilitate, educate and organize scientific research and exploration into the survival of human consciousness (SOHC)” with a particular focus on consciousness surviving permanent bodily death. Following a successful competition in 2021 for essays providing the best evidence for SOHC, BICS is now looking to the future. In this presentation, Robert Bigelow and Colm Kelleher will reveal the details, including application process and important dates, for BICS’s new grants program for 2023, called “The Challenge”, that promises to significantly impact the future of research in the field of SOHC. Audience members attending this panel are invited to a complimentary bag lunch, for which they may make their menu selection on the conference registration form.
Robert Bigelow >> Las Vegas entrepreneur Robert T. Bigelow is the Founder and President of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies. BICS was founded in 2020 to support research into both the survival of human consciousness after physical death and, based on data from such studies, the nature of the afterlife. In 2021, BICS launched a highly publicized and very successful global essay competition in which $1,800,000 was awarded to twenty-nine (29) winning essays. The essay requirement was to provide the best evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that human consciousness survives bodily death.

Robert Bigelow graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Robert Bigelow is an experienced general contractor, designer, developer, financier, buyer and manager of many large real estate projects in the US. Over the course of his career spanning many decades, he has designed and built numerous apartment complexes, including the Budget Suites of America hotel chain that are currently in
three southwestern states.

In 1999, Robert Bigelow founded Bigelow Aerospace, LLC. The purpose of Bigelow Aerospace was to provide general contracting and research and development for the design, development and construction of habitable space structures for private enterprise and government use. Mr. Bigelow personally provided all financial support totaling over $350 Million Dollars. He has successfully launched two subscale spacecraft called Genesis I & II into orbit as well as the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM), which is attached to the Tranquility module of the International Space Station. Moreover, Mr. Bigelow served as the program manager of the B330 spacecraft – Bigelow Aerospace’s main habitation system for LEO and beyond LEO destinations. He also holds 29 patents on aerospace systems and hardware.

NDE Evidence and the Next Steps in Mind-Brain Research

NDEs provide strong evidence that the nonmaterial mind is a separate entity that interfaces with the brain in ordinary consciousness—a view that requires a radical shift in neuroscience. Earlier scientific revolutions like the heliocentric view of the heavens took more than a century to be accepted whereas more recent revolutions like the structure of the atom took less than 20 years. The difference was the ability to provide convincing evidence and a model of the new paradigm to other scientists. We present the NDE evidence for the separate mind entity and a model of, and evidence for, mind-brain interaction. There is good NDE evidence that the nonmaterial mind interacts with physical matter including neural mechanisms and there is good neurological evidence from neural structures and anesthesiology that suggests an interface for the mind to work with the brain. What is needed now is a research program to validate this model of mind-brain interaction.
Robert and Suzanne Mays have studied NDE phenomena together for over 40 years, although neither has had an NDE. They are particularly interested in veridical perceptions during NDEs and apparent interactions during NDEs between the NDEr and physical reality, as well as the neurological evidence of the interaction of the nonmaterial mind with the brain during ordinary consciousness, especially in language comprehension and in memory formation and recall. Their current areas of focus are on (1) NDErs’ prophetic visions of world events, (2) describing the nature of the transcendent realm as is evident in NDEr accounts, and (3) understanding the nature of consciousness as an individuated mind-entity directly interacting with a physical body and brain, as opposed to a non-localized entity spread out across all of existence, transmitting to and receiving from the physical brain

We are at a pivotal moment in human history: A new species of Human is emerging. We have the opportunity to evolve into this new consciousness – or not. We all feel and witness the struggle between the age-old focus on ego, greed, power struggles and competition – vs – a new focus on the heart, cooperation, and Oneness with all beings we share this world with. During my NDE, I was taught that the 2 greatest challenges humans are here to explore and develop are: 1) Learning to consciously use, and create with, the power of our thoughts, rather than destroy with unconscious, repetitive, negative thinking; and 2) the importance of how we show up in our relationships – with people, the environment, and ourSelves. I will recount my NDE, and how working with these 2 teachings dramatically enhanced my life. I will share specific ways you can use the power of your thoughts and heart to co-create with the Universe, connect with the Oneness – and birth the new species within yourself.
Barbara Ireland is on a mission is to help birth the emerging, new species of human, Homo Diamondis – through the development of the conscious use of our thoughts and the power of the heart. She is author of the Amazon bestseller, “How To Stop Negative Thoughts: What My Near Death Experience Taught Me About Mind Loops, Neuroscience, and Happiness,” and contributing author to “The Transformative Power of Near-Death Experiences: How the Messages of NDEs Can Positively Impact the World.” She is founder of The De-Looping Method that uses neuroscience to interrupt repetitive, negative thoughts, and is creator of the Blueprint For Magic method of conscious-creating (both based on her NDE). Ireland trains individuals, foundations, and corporations (Boeing and others) to stop worry, raise self-esteem, and develop skill in joyful, conscious-creating. She is also a singer, lover of nature, and short story writer

In the diversity of Near-Death Experiences, perhaps the most universal experience and therefore the lost luminous message is the reality that we are all ONE.

We are not only connected to each other, but connected to Divine Source. It is time to remember our origins and who we truly are, so that humanity can step into higher consciousness and a more compassionate way of being.

In 1997 Olsen experienced a horrific auto accident, which took the lives of half his family and nearly killed him. At the time of his accident, Olsen had incredible Out-of-Body and Near-Death Experiences, bringing him insights not common in today’s world. Jeff has integrated these experiences into everyday life, inspiring others to embrace the light within themselves and to choose joy and true connection in all they do.

Choosing joy and connection is a profound step toward oneness; oneness with the universe, oneness in relationships, and perhaps most importantly, oneness with one’s self.
Jeffery Olsen is a best-selling author who inspires audiences internationally with his intriguing story of perseverance and inner strength. After a horrific automobile accident took the lives of his wife and youngest son, also inflicting multiple life-threatening injuries to Jeff (including the amputation of his left leg) he found the courage to survive over 18 surgeries and eventually heal both physically and emotionally. At the time of his accident, Olsen had incredible Out-of-Body and Near-Death Experiences, bringing him insights not common in today’s world. Jeff has integrated these experiences into everyday life, inspiring others to embrace the beauty around them and choose joy in all they do. Olsen’s latest book, WHERE ARE YOU? is a collaboration with his oldest son Spencer, who also survived the accident at the age of seven. They have captured in a simple and powerful way their healing journey through the innocent perspective of that seven-year-old child and have created a heartfelt book for all ages. Among Jeff’s many accomplishments, he is most fulfilled by simply being a husband, father and friend. www.EnvoyPublishing.com

In this presentation, you will discover how during Ingrid’s NDE, while navigating in the spirit realm, she saw her mom who was about 10 min away from the place where Ingrid was drowning, and thanks to the strong connection between them, her mom was able to sense Ingrid’s presence. And then, by following her intuition and inner guidance she was able to find Ingrid’s lifeless body sunk at the bottom of a tank filled with frigid water, and to save her. Ingrid came back from the other realm to confirm that connection and communication between realms is absolutely real. When she grew up, Ingrid had a second NDE and not long after the Beings of Light revealed to her that one of the purposes of her NDEs was to bring back the message of the importance of connection which is essential to reuniting with our neighbors in Oneness. True Connection can only be achieved through Unconditional Love. Nowadays Ingrid is still communicating and learning from the Beings of Light and the spirit realm.
From the moment of her NDE at the age of two, Ingrid was aware of other dimensions of life than those most of us normally experience. She was also gifted with the wise input of “Beings of Light” who gave her invaluable insights and assistance as she faced the challenges of growing up and finding her professional destiny as an oceanographer. Throughout her life journey from her native Colombia to Europe and her eventual home in the USA — and from a deadly war zone to underwater explorations and a NASA research center — Ingrid teaches how any human experience can be illumined from within when we are tuned in with inner guidance

When Rose’s husband committed suicide, she fell into a pit so deep and dark that medical professionals expressed doubts about her recovery. Two years later, Rose was diagnosed with cancer, and during a related surgical biopsy, she bled to death. In heaven, her predominant emotion was gratitude that this life experience had ended, but the angelic beings she encountered encouraged Rose to return to earth. She was told that if she agreed to go back, she’d be restored to perfect health, physically, emotionally and mentally. After Rose’s restoration to life, she sold off her earthly possessions and moved 1,000 miles due west to start a new life in the Midwest. When asked how her life has changed after this NDE, she often replies, “Every single thing about my life has been transformed. Every single thing.” Her story has been heard by 10+ million people.

For 20 years, Rose Thornton enjoyed a national reputation as an expert on old houses. The author of ten books, Rose has been featured on everything from PBS’ “History Detectives” to BBC Radio. In 2016, her husband committed suicide and two years later, Rose was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. After a “routine” medical procedure, Rose bled to death. In heaven, she was told that if she agreed to return to earth, she’d be restored to wholeness. Subsequently, medical tests affirmed that not only had the disease disappeared, but she was also healed of the crippling grief. Her story has now been featured on dozens of video platforms and radio shows, and most recently, Rose did a two-hour interview on Coast-to-Coast. More than 10 million listeners have heard Rose’s NDE, and the most frequent comment she receives is, “This is the best NDE I’ve ever heard”

The Matrix movie trilogy, and the Matrix Resurrection film of 2022, made famous the notion there is a deeper truth than the video game nature of our day-to-day existence. In those films, this deeper reality was visited by swallowing a red pill – much like Plato’s metaphor, some four centuries before Christ, of the enlightened who break their chains, and exit the cave of shadows to enter the sunlight of truth. Our conviction at NDE Radio – that NDEs provide that “red pill” visit to the deeper reality – is that we are helping demonstrate to listeners around the world the oneness we share with each another, and with the Earth itself. Is there a lasting impact when listen to what NDErs are telling us? In the eight years since launching the NDE Radio podcasts, this is a report on what progress we’re making based on a sampling of our listeners’ theological questions and responses.
Lee Witting is the host of NDE Radio. An experiencer himself, Lee earned his doctorate in NDE Studies from Bangor Theological Seminary, and served for many years as Chaplain at Eastern Maine Medical Center and as Pastor of the Union St. Brick Church, in Bangor, Maine. He has served on the IANDS Board of Directors, and as editor of IANDS Vital Signs. A survey of 834 near-death experiencers (NDErs) was conducted. The survey included questions asking about awareness during their NDEs regarding: 1. Any specific information / awareness that a mystical universal connection or unity/oneness exists? 2. Any specific information / awareness regarding love? 3. Any specific information / awareness that God or a supreme being exists? A remarkably high percentage of NDErs answered ‘Yes’ to these questions- 47.1%, 57.1%, and 48.0% to questions one through three, respectively. All three of these questions allowed a narrative response. These narrative responses showed remarkably consistent insights: 1. NDErs often found that a mystical universal connection/unity/oneness really exists. 2. NDErs often describe the unearthly love in their NDEs as a part of everything, as if love connects everyone and everything. 3. God is often described as beyond earthly words and is a reality.
Jeffrey Long, M.D. is a radiation oncology physician living in Houma, Louisiana. Over 20 years ago he founded the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation (nderf.org). Dr. Long has investigated over 3500 near-death experiences (NDEs), which is by far the largest number of NDEs ever scientifically studied. Portions of the NDERF website have been posted in over 30 languages allowing global outreach. The results of his previous research were published in the New York Times bestselling book Evidence of the Afterlife: The Science of Near-Death Experiences. Millions of people have seen Dr. Long discuss his research on shows including the NBC Today Show, The Dr. Oz Show, National Geographic television, History Channel, The O’Reilly Factor, and on television broadcasts around the world

Have you ever wondered . . . Are at least some of the events that happen while you are on earth pre-planned? If so, who does the planning? You, your angels / guides, the Light? To what degree are events planned? Are they completely determined or is just the possibility of certain outcomes designed? Does the success of these plans correlate with your soul / energy advancement and other factors? Can pre-planning be changed and, if so, how and by whom? Why would anyone choose to suffer with illness, abuse, loneliness, addiction, etc.? Are murder and suicide preplanned? Is your earthly experience really purposeful and meaningful? Or is part – or all of it – random, chaotic, and unfair? If you have thought about these questions, you have lots of company. I hear them often from people around the world, especially those experiencing tragedy, pain, and hopelessness
Mark Pitstick, MA, DC, has fifty years’ experience helping people in hospitals, pastoral counseling settings, mental health centers, and holistic health care practice. His training includes: suicide prevention counseling; graduate theology studies; master degree in clinical psychology; and doctorate in chiropractic health care. It is an informative but scientific approach, carried out by a forensic neuropsychiatrist, to the near death experiences (NDE). With numerous testimonials from people from many parts of the world who have had out-of-body experiences during their NDE. We postulate that these out-of-body experiences could constitute an objective way of affirming the existence of a displacement of consciousness outside of its physical container, which is the brain. Furthermore, many of these experiences are confirmed by people in the immediate environment, whether they are medical professionals, family members and friends. Techniques to approach an NDE followed by an OBE are discussed from a scientific point of view but in a very comprehensible manner.

After our Oneness experience, we are radiating Luminous Love so strong we could never imagine it gone from our perception. Until it is. Sometimes it gradually fades over time, like a dream. At other times, the fabric of our being tears unexpectedly, now marred with shadow and stained by pain. These recent years of cultural upheaval have shredded most of us to some degree. We have found our hearts broken, Luminous Love seeming beyond the horizon of our grasp. But, there are specific steps we can take to get it back. Valerie will validate current common triggers for losing unconditional love for self and others, and the grief that accompanies that loss; encourage us that Luminous Love is a quantum state that we CAN re-access; and remind us that, like energy-matter, Love is a multiple-sided aspect of the Oneness that we can lose only to our linear perception
A spiritual experiencer since childhood, Valerie Varan has long looked to science and ancient wisdom to help us all understand our transcendent experiences of Oneness and Luminous Love. For over four decades, she has been synthesizing research in quantum physics, bioenergetics, neuroscience, east-west psychology, meditation, epigenetics, and mind-body science. Valerie is a nationally certified and CO-licensed professional counselor and spiritual life coach in private practice for over fifteen years. She specializes in issues of subtle energy awareness and awakening to higher consciousness states we here at IANDS call Luminous Love and Oneness. She is author of “Living in a Quantum Reality: Using Quantum Physics and Psychology to Embrace Your Higher Consciousness”, endorsed by energy psychology’s David Feinstein and Fred Gallo, as well as quantum physicists Claude Swanson and Amit Goswami. Valerie’s work has been featured in the US and internationally, and in various magazines, online articles and interviews. In January of 2021, Robert Bigelow, of the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies (BICS), announced a competition for the best essay providing evidence of an afterlife–with a top prize of $500,000. In November of that year, BICS announced the winners: 29 essays whose authors received a total of $1.8 million. In this panel, two contest winners will summarize their essays, one is an Honorable Mention author duo, and the other is the First Prize winner. Panelists will discuss what they consider the best directions for future afterlife research; and panelists will respond to questions and comments from the audience.
Janice Miner Holden, EdD, LPC-S, ACMHP >> After 31 years on the University of North Texas (UNT) Counseling Program faculty, Jan Holden retired in 2019 as Professor Emerita of Counseling. Beginning in 1988 with her doctoral dissertation, her primary research focus has been counseling implications of near-death and related experiences. In this research area she has over 50 refereed journal publications and over 100 national and international presentations and has received numerous awards and honors. Since 2008 she has served as editor-in-chief of the International Association for Near-Death Studies’s scholarly Journal of Near-Death Studies, and she serves currently as that association’s President. Her website is www.janholden.com

Robert Mays, BSc/Susanne Mays, AAS >> Robert and Suzanne Mays have studied NDE phenomena together for over 40 years, although neither has had an NDE.

Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD >> Jeffrey is host and producer of the New Thinking Allowed channel on YouTube. He is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “Parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the Grand Prize winner of the 2021 Bigelow Institute essay competition regarding the best evidence for survival of human consciousness after permanent bodily death

Angie Willson-Quayle, PhD >> IANDS Chapter Group Leader outside Washington, DC since 2019. However, my interest in IANDS grew out of the three spiritually transformative experiences I had years ago. Those forever changed my life and got me on a spiritual path that I direct daily towards love, ‘giving back’ and a deeper awareness of true self. I am originally from the United Kingdom, but I have lived in the United States since 1991. My two daughters were born here, and this is now my permanent home. Although I began my study of Psychology in London, I completed my research-based doctoral training in Developmental Psychology in Northern Virginia. More recently, I did an uncharacteristic ‘180 -degree turn’ in my profession. This was not my idea! I moved from research to the clinical arena. I started retraining to work with couples in relationship distress, but this was ONLY after I could no longer ignore the clamorous call of the Universe to change direction that had filled my head for years. When I finally conceded kicking and screaming, a new path opened up effortlessly and mysteriously, and things have been falling into place ever since. Ah, the magic of the Universe…!

Multiple times, in multiple ways, over my lifetime I’ve experienced Oneness. I said nothing for decades. Instead, I put The Ineffable into action, or rather allowed It to act through me, when facing division, judgmental attitudes, and self-righteousness interests. It’s less that I have diminished feelings of conflict, alienation, fear of punishment, and death. It’s more that I know what I am, who I am, where I am from, and to where I am going. The Living Remembrance compels me to care for others even by putting myself at risk for strangers. Touching Timelessness leaves me living in a constant state of déjà vu. Expressions of compassion and love naturally and unavoidably arise from a transcendental Union experience. I will talk about all of this and, inshallah, create a space combining our collective Luminous selves to multiple, and experience, the Radiance among us and feel the Essence of Love together.
International Audible Best-Selling author of Heaven Is Beautiful (optioned for a film), Peter Panagore, MDiv., first died in 1980 while ice climbing and died again in 2015 of a heart attack. Both times he chose to return to life the sake of love and caring. Peter earned his BA in English at the University of Massachusetts and his MDiv at Yale, focusing on Western Mysticism, and then served progressive church communities for two decades in New England. Recruited to television, Peter spent fifteen years writing stories of hope and inspiration for his daily broadcast on NBC-TV during News Center Maine, reaching eighty thousand viewers a day as a cultural influencer and renown storyteller. His first book, Two Minutes for God, is devotional book of stories drawn from his TV and FM spots and is Maine Best Seller. Peter has had multiple mystically transformative experiences over his lifetime, which he encourages through his forty years of Centering Prayer and Kriya Yoga practice. Mystical Experiencers report that the ethereal Oneness experienced throughout a Transcendent state is a sublime peak experience, which radically alters one’s Life trajectory. Medicinal storytelling, including yet not limited to Near-Death Experiences, document how these experiences radically alter collective consciousness and inspire others to more aligned ways of Being. Yet, authentic embodiment of our Spiritual knowing is a notable challenge for seekers of all paths, as we are recurrently confronted with the dichotomy between our awakening and the realities of our complex and fragile humanity. This lecture, offered humbly by a perfectly imperfect experiencer and healer, explores the cultural phenomenon of Spiritual bypassing to highlight the need for integration of our human complexities and grounded embodiment of our Light, so we may shine as a relatable source of authentic connection to those we are blessed to inspire and serve.

Brooke Grove, MA, MFT, is a poly-trauma survivor, near death experiencer and multi-disciplinary integrative healer in co-creation with Spirit. A former psychotherapist, Brooke has advanced degrees in Clinical Psychology, Marital and Family Therapy and Clinical Art Therapy, enhanced by numerous post-graduate certifications, including yet not limited to, Shamanic Energy Medicine, Quantum Fieldwork and Transpersonal Neuroscience. Brooke has been featured on many podcasts, YouTube interviews, documentaries and ISGO. She is currently writing her first book. I died three times in three months in 1977, and each time had a near-death experience and each was different. In my third, a voice larger than big told me and I quote: “Test revelation. You are to do the research. One book for each death.” Book one was not named (I suspect it was my first one – COMING BACK TO LIFE). Book two: FUTURE MEMORY. Book three: A MANUAL FOR DEVELOPING HUMANS. Being a cop’s kid raised in a police station, I used police investigative techniques as my protocol. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, whom I met at O’Hare Airport near Chicago, listened to my story, and said I was a near-death survivor. She never mentioned Raymond Moody, nor had I heard of him or his famous book. In my first episode of “living the future before it occurred,” I saw myself quitting my bank job and moving to Falls, Church, Virginia. This I did, and began my work interviewing others like myself, a work that has continued unabated for 44 years.
PMH Atwater, L.H.D., had three near-death experiences in three months in 1977. This turned her life around completely. The following year she turned to research, because of what she was told to do during her third episode – and became one of the original in the field of near-death studies, completing 18 books on or related to the subject. Some of her findings have been verified in clinical settings, among them the prospective study done in Holland and published in Lancet. To date, her work covers nearly 5,000 adult and child experiencers

Impressions of NDEs: Love and Oneness

Based on quotes of more than 100 NDErs one can draw two important conclusions. The first is that Love is the most important thing there is, and that Unconditional Love awaits us when our body dies and our consciousness is released. The second message is that we are at least very thoroughly interconnected with each other, with other animals, with nature, and in fact with all that exists. However, if we take a closer look at what many NDErs are saying, the conclusion could be more extreme than just this interconnectedness. It should probably be that we are all ONE, seen from another dimension. Love is what seems to bind us. If enough people become aware of this, humanity could really take a beneficial next step forward
Robert Christophor Coppes holds a PhD in economics and worked for many years at the University of Groningen and in the banking industry. His conviction that Near-Death Experiences are true spiritual experiences dates back to 1979 when he read Raymond Moody’s Life after Life. In 2006, he wrote a book in which he compared the essences of NDEs with those of five world religions. A few years later he wrote Messages from The Light, which was also translated in Dutch and German. The message he got from his many interviews with NDErs is that the 2008 financial crisis was the consequence of our focus on our short-term self-interest. It would be more beneficial if we changed our focus towards a long-term our-interest. In 1995, he started as an author when he wrote a book about his brother, who suffered from aids. It shows how friends and family lovingly helped him through the final stages of his life. A few years later he wrote a book about the real experiences of a Muslim girl who witnessed the biggest single massacre in Europe after the Second World War in Srebrenica, in 1995

Love is all there is, but what does that mean?

NDERF is a science research organization and we have over 5,000 experiences posted on NDERF. But when we I talk about NDEs, I’m looking for the best evidence to understand the concepts that I am interested in researching. I will explain a little bit of the science involved in analyzing experiences. This goes to the reliability and consistency of the results of the study. Other researchers will be easily able to verify the data and repeat the results.

Frequently, NDErs report that “love is all there is”, but what does that mean? First, we need to define our terms – what is love? Are we talking about love on earth or is there something more to it? After reading so many NDEs, I think that the description of “love times a million” would mean that we can only perceive a small portion of what love on earth means. That means a better way to frame the issue would be looking at love as NDErs perceive it because they’ve experienced love without body/mind filters. What commonalities do we see on the other side? Can all of this be related to “love” or are these separate parts of the experience? The answers may surprise you as science may, indeed, hold the keys to making sense of this world and the next

Over the past 25 years, Nathan G. Castle, OP has helped more than 300 “stuck”—and not-so- stuck souls who died suddenly and traumatically adjust to the afterlife. Victims of fires, automobile accidents, shootings, stabbings, drownings—and suicides—come to him in his dreams seeking help to resolve their Interrupted Death Experiences. Father Nathan believes that providing such help is something the Holy Spirit has given him and his prayer partners to do. In this presentation he will describe the process of first being contacted during sleep, recording the details in the dream in a journal, meeting with a prayer partner, moving into protective prayer and lending his voice so that the person seeking assistance can describe their experience. The person is then coached into choosing a trusted companion to help them make a significant afterlife passage.
Father Nathan Castle graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio and entered the Dominican order in 1979. He received MA and MDiv degrees from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, California. He was Director of the Catholic Communities at Stanford University, and Arizona State University. He believes the Holy Spirit has given him a “night job” of helping souls who died suddenly and violently find afterlife peace. By Me all is pervaded: A cosmic context for transpersonal research, lived experience, and Oneness

This presentation and group discussion of Oneness draws from and is informed by a doctoral research study (Knight, 2013) exploring after-death contact (ADC) phenomena and the researcher’s lived experience of transpersonal phenomena. It discusses how experiences of Oneness not only lead to a change of internal state for the experiencer, such that they know the inward nature of all things, but enable them to experience the spiritual foundations of reality. Such experiences transcend positivist and strictly empirical views of the universe and the individual by recognizing and acknowledging a spiritual dimension of existence and, alternate notions and understandings of a reality.
Dr Michele Knight is a Social Worker, Social Scientist, ADC/NDE Experiencer, Researcher and independent Scholar and Author. She utilizes a social constructionist approach to research, qualitative methods, and narrative analysis for meaning and theory construction and a Social Work humanistic practice framework. She specializes in bereavement, spirituality, transpersonal/transcendent phenomena, and the Fourth Way, and is a proud member of IANDS and ACISTE. Her prevailing philosophy is that the subjective experiences and understandings of the meaning of death and the dead evidence a changing and shifting theoretical and intellectual discourse which is helping to revision how individuals conceptualize what they are as human beings, why they exist as spiritual beings in a physical body and why the dead, by their cross-cultural presence, offer humanity an invitation to live more consciously

A Marriage of Heaven and Hell: How Oneness in psychedelic and near-death experiences may be both bound by and beyond the brain

The Mystical Experience (ME) encompasses, as a defining dimension, ‘Oneness’. This profound experience is not only emergent in NDEs – but is reliably precipitated via serotonergic psychedelics. The neural correlates of the psychedelic ME will be clearly delineated, with the implication that these may also underlie the ME of the NDE. Additionally, while ‘bliss’ is usually another ME dimension, its absence is also reported, such as in challenging NDEs and psychedelic experiences. As such, a case of a spiritual emergency after psilocybin will be shared – where the predictive processing theory of the brain informed its remission. However, despite recourse to neural mechanisms here, unexplained anomalous phenomena (e.g. psi) are very common in both NDE and psychedelic experiences. Indeed, a hypothesis of psi will be offered entailing the entropic brain theory, which gestures toward post-materialism, but also calls for a reconciliation with neuroscience; a marriage of ‘Heaven and Hell’.
Pascal received a BSc Hons (Aberdeen University) in Neuroscience and an MSc (University College London) in Clinical Mental Health Sciences. He is in the final stage of a PhD in Psychology at the University of Greenwich with Dr. David Luke, where his research mainly encompasses qualitative content analyses of mystical-type human experiences, both neuropharmacological and spontaneous – specifically, the psychedelic (namely DMT) experience and the near-death experience (NDE). This is with a view to developing a formalized framework of thinking that the NDE may best be considered an endogenously mediated psychedelic episode, as indicated not only by their resonant structural phenomenology and thus shared neural correlates, but also their long-term as well parapsychological effects. As such Pascal’s interests lie in death and dying as an entangled continuum – existing at the levels of the molecular, humanistic, and transpersonal. He has presented at conferences such as Breaking Conventions, and has been invited to give talks such as with the Oxford University Psychedelic Society. He is the 2020 recipient of the Schmeidler Outstanding Student Award

This presentation will explore how the human being’s relationship to time within a given culture contributes to one’s overall well-being or distress/illness. The second part of this presentation will explore the therapeutic and healing benefit of experiences of timelessness, oneness, and the apparent dissolution between self and other, as well as past, present, and future.
Christine Clawley contracted the deadly necrotizing fasciitis in her neck and chest at age 24. With a 1-10% chance of surviving, she narrowly survived after being put in a medically induced coma for over three weeks. After awakening from the coma, she embarked on my own journey of healing and self-understanding through exploring various healing modalities and techniques. She obtained her MA degree in Jungian/Depth Counseling Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and is currently practicing as a licensed professional counselor in Arizona and Colorado

The presentation will show how the NDE, while being tailored to the individual, provides universal lessons that can help in daily life. People are divided by race, nationality, religion, etc. because we have forgotten that we are literally all One. Many times fundamentalists will attack NDE experiencers because their experience falls outside the bounds of that particular religion or conflicts with Atheistic Materialism.

Two panelists, Deborah Conner, MA, and Christina Rawls, PhD, were gifted with after -effects from an NDE/OBE experience, STE experiences, and lifelong connection with psi phenomena and the Other Side.
Deborah’s experiences have finally culminated in her new practice of coaching clients with living their lives with Luminosity – – getting their “Glow On” and integrating their anomalous experiences with compassion and love for others.
Christina’s resulted in Orb photography, the study of mental evidential, trance, and physical mediumship – -providing readings from the Other Side and ongoing gifts of validation of the afterlife, which may ultimately help others. Love is the answer –
– for both panelists who have indeed experienced “amazing” gifts.

This Panel will highlight students studying NDEs. First, a Student nurse will interview a senior Military Nurse and how she became inspired by a patient who had an NDE. Secondly, a Ph.D. student will gain needed insight from a Near-Death Experiencer
Debbie James, MSN, RN, CCRN-K >>Debbie James has worked in the Adult Critical Care arena for the last 44 years as a clinical nurse, nurse manager, nurse educator, and Clinical Nurse Specialist. She is a certified bereavement facilitator and formed two support groups in San Antonio: one for near-death experiencers (NDErs) and for organ donor families. After completing her master’s thesis on NDEs and Disclosure, she served on the Board of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS). In 2009, Debbie co-authored and edited the first compilation of research on near-death experiences, Handbook of Near-Death Experiences: Thirty Years of Investigation. She has delivered numerous presentations regarding NDEs and spiritually transformative experiences (STEs) to small group sessions/classes as well as international conferences audiences

Vincent de Vice >> I am a senior nursing student in the process of completing my B.S.N. degree with an interest in homecare and hospice specialties. I have been reading NDE literature since high school and this interest has led me to IANDS. I deeply aspire to the multitude of research on NDE’s and have had the tremendous opportunity to collaborate with the IANDS community. Thanks to Deborah James and many other speakers and IANDS researchers, I have been graced with connecting with so many amazing people from a variety of disciplines from all over the world. I share my knowledge of NDE’s with many people and in mostly all of those encounters they yield a sincere enthusiastic interest. It would be an honor and a privilege to participate in a panel moderated by Deborah James along with some fellow students who have themselves happily engaged with NDE accounts and research

Dr. Diane Corcoran >> Diane Corcoran obtained her PhD in Nursing from the University of TX at Austin in 1981. At that time, she was also serving as an Officer in the U. S. Army – with a career that lasted 25 years. She heard her first NDE account from a young soldier. In 1981 a new organization was incorporated and is now known as the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS). Diane has served on the Board of Directors numerous times, and this includes many years as President. She helped facilitate research conducted on the reality of events that we now know as Near-Death Experiences (NDEs). Diane now has her own consulting firm and that young soldier in Vietnam — he had told Diane about his NDE before there was a name for these types of experiences.

Judith Mandalise >> is a multiple NDEr. She is a licensed professional counselor in private practice with children, adolescents and adults in individual and group settings. Three Registered Nurse experiencers share their personal and patient reports of near-death experiences, spiritually transformative experiences, out-of-body experiences, and inspirational messages about the afterlife, heaven, Jesus, angels and the love of God. Julie Hedenborg will Moderate the Q and A in-person at the Conference. They will discuss medical staff’s responses to patient reports of NDEs and STEs; including witnessing how patients were treated after sharing their events with fellow healthcare workers. Whenever the nurse experiencers actively listened and validated patient’s experiences, it helped them process, integrate and normalize their life-altering events. Such supportive measures help foster increased patient care and comfort. Supporting patient’s needs in every department of care has a positive impact on their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, hastening their recovery or peaceful transition.

The countless supernatural testimonies she receives in her podcast inbox (many people have never shared) have led her to have great compassion for experiencers

Jean Keegan Daly, RN, AHNA >> Jean Keegan Daly, a Holistic RN and former Hospice nurse is a Holistic Therapist, Counselor, and Educator specializing in a body, mind, spirit approach to health, wellness, and transitional phases of life including the dying process. Jean’s self-published book, “Reflections of a Seasoned Soul” details the story of her own profound NDE and some of her many lifelong STEs. In her book Jean also describes the transformational interactions she had with three of her most memorable hospice patients, two of whom appeared to her in their afterlife communications. A 57-year veteran RN, Jean has witnessed the NDEs and STEs of many patients as well as reactions of medical professionals and family members who disbelieved and invalidated the patients’ experiences. Their behaviors toward the patients were primarily due to their own bias and/or ignorance of this very real and important event in the patients’ own vivid encounters. Jean strongly advocates education to promote needed attitude changes and support for patients

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (“Mormon” Church) was founded in 1830 by 24 year old Joseph Smith, based on a vision which had many NDE elements. Later he visited by an angel who, after delivering a message, departed through a tunnel into heaven. Once a mob beat him, and left him for dead. During assault Smith watched the rest of the assault from above, when his spirit left his body. From 1784 to the present thousands of Latter-day Saints have had extensive NDEs, including Mormon leader, Jedediah Grant. In 1920 a Mormon leader from Idaho, Heber Hale, shared his NDE in the Church’s conference. Details of these and other NDEs in Mormon Faith, in Judaism, early Christianity and other faiths will be described. Presenter will conclude with the suggestion tradition religions should not be skeptical of NDEs. Neither should those who accept NDEs be skeptical of tradition religion. Both share common roots.

Without discussing the rightness or wrongness of Mormonism, this presentation explains why many Mormons comfortably embrace near-death experiences. While much of the western Judeo-Christian world looks askance at NDEs and related phenomena, most Mormons, or members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as they prefer to be called, view glimpses of eternity and end-of-life phenomena as normal, scriptural, and edifying. Indeed, though Mormons use a different nomenclature than the NDE community, they accept the eternal and divine nature of the human soul, communications with Deity, and after-death communications as a basis for belief at a personal level and as the source of Mormon doctrine at an institutional level. While such experiences are considered sacred, sharing them is acceptable and sometimes encouraged. When spiritual and faith traditions understand one another’s lexicon, they may realize they are much nearer a timeless oneness than they ever imagined.
After decades of silence, award-winning author and international speaker, Dr. Jeff O’Driscoll, finally share spiritual experiences from his 25 years in the emergency department. He saw souls leave their bodies at death and communicated with them and sometimes received impressions about how to care for his patients. His experiences began in childhood, after his brother died in a farm accident. After stepping away from clinical medicine, he published his compelling memoir, NOT YET, and works to help others understand their spiritual experiences

For 40 years, Scott Drummond remained silent about his life-changing NDE that took place during a surgical procedure at age 28. Prior to his NDE, Scott was primarily focused on being successful in business rather than spending time with his wife and family. But during his life review everything changed that equation! Scott was shown how his misplaced personal ambitions were self-centered and negatively impacting him and his family. Though profoundly changed after his experience, several years later, Scott says he received an unmistakable wake-up call when he and his friend were tragically struck by lightning on a golf course. The traumatic event reminded him of the gifts, goals, and life purpose revealed to him in Heaven; to always be kind, and to always be of service to others. No longer fearing death and to be of service to others, Scott decided to finally share his story with the general public to help mitigate their fear of death and dying during the Covid-19 pandemic.
After 40 years of public silence about his spiritual experience, disabled Vietnam Veteran, Scott Drummond finally decided to share his NDE from age 28. Room 4 (Topaz)

As pre-birth experiencers themselves, Christian and Melissa will co-present to discuss pre-birth memories, with the focus being on the value that the human experience offers.
Christian Sundberg, BA, PMP >> When Christian was a young child, he remembered his existence before coming to Earth. While that memory left him completely for his early adult life, it spontaneously returned 11 years ago as Christian took up a meditation practice and went through a personal awakening journey. He also began to have Out of Body Experiences (OBEs). Christian now often speaks publicly as he seeks to remind others in at least a small part of who we really are beneath the human “play.” Professionally, Christian has worked for 15 years as a project manager for complex nuclear pump and valve manufacturing projects, and now for an insurance company. Christian is the author of the book “A Walk in the Physical,” which attempts to succinctly describe the larger spiritual context in which we exist and the importance of love in our human journey

Melissa Denyce >> Melissa Denyce was born into this world with pre-birth memories of divine love and light that she didn’t have a framework to understand, let alone explain. Her deepest desire as a child was to “find God,” or to get back what she had lost. At 19 she had a spiritually transformative experience, in which she awakened into a direct encounter of the love, light, and bliss that she remembered from before. This experience transformed her entire life, because it taught her that, not only are we all eternally encompassed in divine love, but we ourselves are that which we seek.
Now Melissa has made it her life’s mission to share divine love with others in a way that is easy to understand, and more importantly, to experience. She enjoys sharing her own teachings and experiences, as well as interviewing other Near-Death Experiencers, on her YouTube channel, Love Covered Life Podcast, which has almost 20,000 subscribers worldwide, and averages over 150,000 views per month. Her joy is to help people know and experience that God is love and that God is within them

NDErs have life changing insights that can make them feel isolated and fearful of sharing with others. This presentation illustrates the process of creating a support group
Lynn Johnson, PhD >> Lynn Johnson received a PhD in clinical/counseling psychology in 1976 and has been a practicing psychologist since that time. In 1991 he and two friends created the Utah NDE support group that became a component of IANDS

Jim Bruton >> Jim Bruton has been a world traveler and adventure for much of his life- his adventures ranging from living in Africa as wildlife filmmaker for National Geographic to serving as a war journalist for NBC News. Using only a backpack, providing news coverage as a war journalist for NBC News in Iraq, and Lecturing in Telemedicine at Yale University School of Medicine. But when his experimental aircraft crashed in Oct. 2016, he had an adventure that topped them all. Transported to the In Between, his NDE there was not a typical passive one but required him to do something- to change his future and see how all things are interconnected. Jim has documented all of this in his book, “The In Between, A Trip of a Lifetime”

Chris Kito >> At the age of 24, Chris Kito went into anaphylactic shock from a food allergy, and it led him into a life changing Near-Death Experience, in 2012. He will be discussing the events leading up to the NDE, the NDE experience, the NDE event’s aftereffects upon him, and how he has been integrating the experience into his life, both personally and professionally. Chris will also discuss the opportunities and challenges of this life-altering event and how it affects individuals entering adulthood

Bethany Silver >> Bethany B. Silver, Ph.D. has been an educator for 20+ years. She began her teaching career as a psychology instructor at Manchester Community College. At UConn’s Neag School of Education she served as the Director of the Professional Development Academy and Assistant Professor of Educational Technology. Dr. Silver has taught courses in research methods, evaluation, assessment, and learning. She has engaged her research skills with neurology patients at Hartford Hospital, the Capitol Region Education Council, Bloomfield Public Schools, and currently serves as the Chief Performance Officer for the Hartford Public Schools. Bethany has published and presented at conferences nationally and internationally, in the areas of predictive modeling, instructional data teaming, and creating visionary data environments. She is named on a U.S. patent for an assessment reporting system. Mrs. Silver has always been interested in NDEs. Her work in post-NDE-Integration has been inspired and informed by Jim Bruton and Susan Redwine. Jeff Fusco’s Covid-19 journey began on March 24, 2020 when he was hospitalized after crashing in the ER. Over the next few months, he was moved to 4 different hospitals and with only 2 hours to live, was rushed by helicopter to the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors said Jeff was the worst case of Covid-19 they have ever witnessed. In his last hours, Jeff had a OBE shared experience with his parents giving him permission to leave and his wife telling him to fight if he wanted to live.
